Halloween decorations are sold in August. Thanksgiving by September. Christmas by October. Facebook countdowns, like the one pictured, show up in my feed at least once a week about some holiday that is nowhere near happening. And its not just holidays. I work at a school during the day and everyone is counting down till the next break. I even saw countdowns for the last day of school that started the first day of school! I am concerned that we are all thinking about the next big whatever (holiday, break, vacation) and forget to enjoy the day we are in. I’m guilty of this too, of course. I am trying to be more aware of it though. I realized we are missing out on appreciating all the wonderful things that happen everyday. The small things we take for granted like a delicious meal, a hug for no reason for my kids, a great hit in a softball game, or baking a treat in the Easy Bake oven. I mean, I notice these things but why aren’t I looking forward to them? Every day I can find things to look forward to instead of waiting for the “big” things.
