She has worked in the mental health field for over 12 years and has worked in various positions from Job Coach and Retention Specialist and as an ABA therapist working with adults and children with developmental disabilities.
Prior to working at Sandhill, Tonya worked at a local federally qualified health center for over 8 years and held two different positions there. In her first position, she was an Integrated Health Specialist where she helped clients in their homes. Tonya used a person-centered, strengths-based approach to help adults progress with meeting goals and gaining more independence skills, as well as progressing through their struggles. She also completed risk assessments and provided crisis interventions services. Tonya then worked School-Based Therapist where she provided family and individual therapy to children who struggled with various issues, such as ADHD, anxiety, behavioral concerns, grief, trauma, and depression. Their mental health struggles often impacted their ability to be successful at school and also caused distractions and difficulties at home as well. She has completed training in Zero Suicide, Trauma-Informed Care, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and is very comfortable working with individuals with a history of suicidal ideations and those who have experienced traumatic events in their lives. Tonya is comfortable using play therapy during her sessions with children and hopes to become a registered play therapist in the future. Tonya is welcoming and a great listener and provides a comfortable environment for her clients who find it easy to open up and share their experiences and struggles. She uses many different approaches to help clients work through change in order to become the best version of themselves. Tonya's hobbies include spending time with her husband and 3 children, watching sports, listening to music, and binge-watching TV shows. |
