K-12 Certified School Counselor
COUPLES THERAPY SPECIFIC TRAINING
|
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a K-12 Certified School Counselor with over 26 years of experience working with children and families in a variety of settings. I completed my bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia and my master’s degree in professional counseling from Lindenwood University. I then returned to Lindenwood University and completed coursework to become certified in K-12 school counseling.
My therapeutic style is non-judgmental and strengths-based, and I determine the therapeutic approach based on each individual client and family's needs. I use a variety of approaches, including art and play therapy techniques, solution-focused, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. I understand the therapeutic relationship is very important, and strive to make sure all clients feel safe and valued. Because of this, my technique uses a variety of creative approaches to help children, teens, and adults to share obstacles to their wellness and to problem-solve toward solutions. I discovered that I wanted to help others when I was in high school when I started reading about a special education teacher that worked with abused children and children diagnosed with emotional disorders. This interest led me to obtain a degree in psychology and to begin working for the Children's Division right after college. During my 12 years there, I gained a vast amount of experience in collaborating with parents to help their children succeed and feel safe. Since then, I have worked in community mental health and private practice and for 8 years as a school counselor in the Wentzville School District. I have served a variety of ages and have provided individual, group, and family counseling. I am very familiar with school policies and procedures and the process to pursue specialized services (504’s and IEP’s) for students. I currently provide a consultative service for ADHD and executive functioning assessments at Sandhill and have provided counseling and assessment services through the Compass Health network. At Compass, I provided crisis services, assessment, and individual and family therapy. I have worked with a variety of ages and cultures and value diversity and treat everyone as a unique individual with strengths and challenges that should be valued and treated with respect and dignity. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two children. As a family, we enjoy watching movies, playing games, traveling, and doing pretty much anything together. I also enjoy genealogy, reading, spending time in nature, and doing puzzles. |
