Acupoint Therapy is derived from Acupuncture, a form of treatment for a variety of ailments rooted deep in the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The principles of Acupuncture involve lines of energy that flow through the body called meridians. These meridians run throughout the body connecting organs and other parts of the body. There are certain Acupoints that lie along those meridians.
Qi (also called “chi”) is what this flow of energy is called. The philosophy is that when the flow of qi is blocked at any point along the meridian, it can cause a variety of symptoms and/or health conditions along the meridian. This is why a person may be treated with a point on their hand for a headache. Acupressure is a way to receive the benefits of acupuncture without the puncturing of the skin.
Many try acupressure to try and help manage symptoms of conditions such as:
Headaches
Motion sickness
Nausea or vomiting
Stress Management
Muscle tension and pain
Anxiety
Overeating
Just to name a few!
Acupressure can be administered by a professional, and reinforced at home by self-administering recommended points. While it’s a good idea to consult a professional for proper instruction, it can be done through the use of a finger, thumb, knuckle, or tool called a teishein (a small, spring loaded blunt end device). While you may experience tenderness at the treatment point, you should never experience pain with acupressure.
Aromatherapy, or Essential Oil therapy, is when extracted aromatic essences from plants are used to promote a healthy mind, body, and spirit. While oils have gained popularity the last few years with diffusing them in your home to help uplift spirits or provide a calming effect, oils can be very healing. For example, Lavender oil has a cooling nature that affects the liver, lung, and pericardium of the heart. Lavender also helps to encourage smooth flow of liver qi.
Aromatherapy can be combined with acupoint therapy to create a true holistic treatment. By placing particular oils on specific acupoints along the body, it can help stimulate those points further bring the body into better balance. Most of the points that are used are located below the knees, below the elbows, on the face and head, with only a few on the torso. You will be lying on the table completely clothed. Sessions have been known to not only improve certain conditions, but also help you relax, rest, nourish the soul, and quiet the mind. The smooth flow of qi is essential to maintaining total health. Health is not just the absence of disease, but is a vital, energetic outlook for life and the energy to fulfill your goals and achieve your dreams.
