Katie is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She graduated from Lindenwood University Belleville in 2015 with a Masters of Arts in Professional Counseling. In 2007, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in Corporate Communications from Fontbonne University.
Katie’s counseling career started as a traveling therapist for Great Circle’s Fostering Futures program. She was able to use her crisis training from Special School District at Queen of Peace where she worked as a diagnostician and crisis/trauma therapist. Katie’s desire to learn more about the brain and the impacts of trauma on one’s life led her to working at a residential substance abuse home for teenagers with Preferred Family Healthcare. Katie incorporates her “big kid” personality throughout most of her sessions. Often referred by her younger clients, as a “big sister” or “Aunt,” Katie offers therapy in a way that provides openness, comfort, and a better understanding of self and others. The concept of awareness and empathy are the two key elements in making changes in one life. From her experience working at a school, Katie learned that not everyone understands the same way, so it is extremely important to not only understand each other, but to let the individual learn at their own speed and in a way they can fully understand. The more an idea or technique is individualized to one’s learning style, the more receptive an individual will be at changing. For this reason, Katie makes sure to incorporate interests into her therapy techniques; one technique that she uses often is the use of comic book characters to discuss trauma with young children. Katie has used this philosophy of learning with a wide range of ages and issues from children and adolescent to adults struggling with substance abuse issues. Katie also has a belief system of being direct and too the point, as she believes honesty is an important part of the therapeutic alliance in her therapy sessions and often utilizes the stylings of REBT by Robert Ellis. However, Katie also is aware that how things are said can change a defensive mentality to an open to learn mentality, and enjoys incorporating Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and the teachings of Jung into her sessions. Katie occupies her free time exploring, playing billiards on an amateur league, summer musicals at the MUNY, and spending lazy days at home with her family, including her 1-year old Pitbull Terrier Mix, Bam. |
